Masters of black paint, long before we installed film.
Our roots are in detailing and paint correction. Before PPF became part of our work, we built our reputation on black paint: deep reflections, careful refinement and a finish that holds up under bright light. We have perfected paint for customers with award-winning show cars, bringing over 20 years of experience to each vehicle we inspect.
Show-car results do not come from one universal polishing step. We analyze your paint under super-bright inspection lights, looking for defects that ordinary indoor lighting can hide but direct sunlight reveals. We select and test the corrective approach, then refine the finish rather than rush through a quick buff or wax.
What correction actually changes
Controlled abrasive polishing removes or reduces suitable surface imperfections. On clear-coated paint, this means refining a small amount of clear coat to improve reflection and clarity. Wax or sealant can add shine; correction addresses the underlying defects.
Swirls and holograms
Swirls are fine scratches that become obvious around a bright reflection. Holograms are polishing trails or cloudy bands that seem to move as your viewing angle changes, often after rotary polishing that has not been fully refined. We inspect and finish the paint under strong lighting.
The right result for your paint
Some finishes need light refinement; others need several correction stages. Deep scratches, chips and failed clear coat cannot always be safely polished away. We explain what can improve and confirm the scope and price before work begins.

Questions answered
Paint Correction FAQs
What is paint correction?
Paint correction is controlled abrasive polishing that removes or reduces suitable surface defects rather than simply covering them with wax. On clear-coated paint, it refines a small amount of the clear coat to improve how the surface reflects light. The method depends on the paint condition and safe limits.
Is paint correction the same as a quick buff or wax?
No. Buffing is a broad term for machine polishing, and wax adds protection and shine. Professional correction involves inspection, preparation, a tested polishing approach and finish refinement. It addresses the defects themselves rather than relying on temporary filling or gloss alone.
What are holograms in car paint?
Holograms are fine polishing marks that appear as moving bands, trails or cloudy reflections when viewed in strong light. They are often left by an aggressive or insufficiently refined rotary-polishing step. Careful finishing can reduce or remove them where the paint allows.
Does a brand-new car need paint correction?
It may. Transport, washing and previous polishing can leave marks on new paint. We analyze every vehicle, including new cars, and recommend only the work its finish needs.
Can paint correction remove every scratch?
No. Deep scratches, chips, clear-coat failure and damage through the paint may need touch-up or refinishing. Correction removes some material, so preserving the finish matters more than chasing an unsafe promise of total defect removal.
How much does paint correction cost in Arnold?
Paint correction starts at a $399 minimum at STL Auto Defenders. Vehicle size, paint condition, defect severity and the level of refinement determine the final quote after analysis. Ceramic coating and PPF are separate protection options.
Does ceramic coating hide swirls or prevent brush-wash scratches?
No. We address suitable defects before coating. Ceramic coating helps with gloss and maintenance but does not make paint scratch-proof or prevent abrasion from contaminated wash materials.
