The short answer: brush contact can cause fine scratches

Automatic brushes or cloth strips can mark a finish when abrasive dirt is dragged across the surface. Repeated wash marring can leave paint looking hazy in direct sunlight, especially on black and other dark colors. This is a risk, not proof that every automatic wash damages every vehicle. Equipment condition, cleaning practices and the dirt on your vehicle all affect the outcome.

For example, Tesla's Model 3 owner's manual recommends touchless automatic washes instead of equipment that touches the vehicle. Follow the instructions for your own vehicle and protection products.

Why the scratches appear in the sun

Fine defects may blend into a glossy panel under soft indoor light. A bright, concentrated reflection makes them much easier to see. Swirls often look like rings around that light because many small scratches catch it at different angles. At our Arnold shop, we examine paint under bright inspection lights rather than judging the finish by shine alone.

Swirls are different from polishing holograms

Holograms look like sweeping bands or trails that change as you move around the car. They are commonly associated with rotary polishing that has not been sufficiently refined. A wash can reveal marks that were already present; it does not prove the wash created a polishing hologram. Proper finishing and inspection matter, particularly on black paint.

Can wash grit scratch glass, too?

Glass is harder than paint, but it is not immune to abrasive contamination. Glass manufacturer Pilkington warns that abrasive dust can scratch glass during cleaning. That supports being careful with grit and cleaning materials; it does not establish that a particular car wash scratched a particular windshield. Remove loose debris first and use suitable automotive glass-cleaning products. Windshield scratches or visibility concerns need a separate glass assessment.

How STL Auto Defenders can help

Before we installed film, our reputation was built on detailing and mastering black paint. Since 2003, we have refined finishes for daily drivers and customers with award-winning show cars. We start with a paint analysis, wash and decontamination, then test the correction approach. Compounding and polishing can improve suitable swirls, haze and marks while preserving the finish's safe limits.

Paint correction starts at a $399 minimum; the final quote depends on your vehicle and the work required. See our paint correction process and FAQs. Correction improves existing defects. Ceramic coating helps with gloss and easier maintenance, while PPF provides a physical barrier on covered panels. Neither makes careless washing harmless.

Keep the improved finish looking its best

  • Rinse away loose grit before any contact with paint or glass.
  • Use clean, soft wash materials and products appropriate for your vehicle, coating or film.
  • Keep wheel-cleaning materials separate from those used on paint.
  • Use clean drying towels and avoid rubbing remaining dirt into the finish.
  • Follow the care instructions supplied at pickup and the vehicle manufacturer's guidance.

Car-wash damage questions

Why does my paint look scratched after a car wash?

Abrasive dirt trapped between a wash material and the finish can create fine scratches. Repeated contact can leave swirls or haze. Poor washing, drying and previous polishing can also contribute, so the finish needs inspection before assigning a cause.

Are touchless car washes safer for paint?

They avoid the brush contact that can cause wash marring, but cleaning chemicals, water pressure and your vehicle's care instructions still matter. They do not guarantee a damage-free wash or always remove all dirt.

Can you correct car-wash swirls?

We can often reduce or remove suitable shallow defects through paint correction. We analyze the paint first, test an approach and explain safe limits. Deep scratches, chips and failed clear coat may need other repairs.

Will ceramic coating stop car-wash scratches?

No. Ceramic coating helps with maintenance but is not scratch-proof. A careful wash routine is still essential. PPF adds a physical barrier on covered panels, but film can also be damaged by harsh contact or poor washing.

Can paint correction fix scratches in my windshield?

No. Our paint correction service treats paint, not damaged glass. Scratches, pitting or visibility concerns in a windshield require a separate assessment by an automotive glass professional.
